Problem
When YouTube first launched, it quickly rose in popularity but also faced serious legal threats from media companies due to copyright issues. Its future was uncertain, and despite its growth, the platform lacked the resources to fight back effectively.
Solution
Google’s acquisition of YouTube in 2006 for $1.65 billion gave the platform the financial and legal backing it needed to survive. This move not only protected YouTube from lawsuits but also laid the foundation for its exponential growth. Today, YouTube is worth $550 billion, and its founders walked away with life-changing sums.
Lesson
What began as a simple video at the zoo became the seed for a global media empire. But perhaps even more powerful is how that same video is still being used today—by founder Jawed Karim—to raise awareness about critical global issues like microplastics and nanoplastic health risks. Influence, once earned, can be redirected toward meaningful change.
Today marks 20 years since the first EVER video on YouTube.
This 19-second clip about elephants changed the course of entertainment forever.
Here's the untold story of the 21-months that followed this video, which turned a simple zoo visit into a $550B media empire:
